Influence of minor metal oxide components on electrochromic colouration of WO3 films V43C 180.184

Thin polycrystalline electrochromic tungsten oxide (WO3) and WO3 based, binary system mixed oxide thin films with various ratios of tungsten to the other metal (lanthanum, cerium or titanium), were obtained by spray pyrolysis using acetylacetonates of appropriate metals and lanthanum chloride as precursors. The films were deposited on glass coated with a transparent conductive layer (SnO2:F). The structure, morphology and chemical composition of these films were studied by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXRD), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS measurements, in agreement with GIXRD results have revealed mixed oxide character of the WO3–REO–s films with tungsten trioxide generally reduced to WO2·92. The electrochromic behaviour was examined by scanning voltammetry and optical spectroscopy. All films investigated have proved to be electrochemically stable with reversible colouration and bleaching when cycled at voltages ranged from - 2·5 to +3·0 V. The spectral characteristics in the visible and solar range were observed to be strongly affected by the minor metal oxide components.
