Raw material sources for alumina in glass V23 251-259

Raw material sources for alumina in glass V23 251-259

Despite the title there is no single answer as to why alumina is deliberately added to glasses. Its addition, whether as a pure chemical or as a component of a natural mineral, affects the chemical durability, mechanical strength, thermal expansion, viscosity of the molten glass, crystallisation (or devitrification), and the behaviour of the melt in the furnace, even to the point of being an aid in the control of glass colour. In the past the value of alumina was not recognised and where its benefits are now seen to exist in older glass compositions the alumina was seemingly present ad- ventitously rather than deliberately.
