This is the second of a series of review papers which the Society plans to publish in Glass technology and Physics and chemistry of glasses. Frank (George) West-Oram studied under Professor W.E.S.Turner, FRS, at the Department of Glass Technology, Sheffield University, gaining the degree of M.Sc. Tech. He lectured at the Department and then joined Wood Brothers Glass Company Ltd., Barnsley, working under the Technical Director, Adeline M.Jackson, B.Sc.,FSGT. He moved to the Carborundum Company's Refractories Division and then to Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., Alkali (laterMond) Division, Northwich, becoming a Technical Service Manager with special responsibility for the glass industry, and travelling widely overseas. Since retirement from ICI, he has been doing consultancy work and technical writing as well as pursuing a variety of other interests. He is a Vice-President and Fellow of the Society, also a Fellow of the Institutes of Ceramics and Energy, and a Chartered Engineer. In World War 2 he served in the British and Indian Armies, retiring with the rank of Major.
