The effect of arsenic on the composition of the gas in seed during the refining of glass V10 15-21

Numerous 45 g melts of glass of composition 16-5Na20, 10-OCa0, 73.5Si02 have been made for various times at 1400C with various additions of from 0.02 to 1.0% As2O3. The experiments included using NaN03 to supply 0,l-0, and 5.0% Na3O. Measurements of refining behaviour were made, and the gas contained in the seed analysed by gas chromatography. When no arsenic was added the only major component of the gas was CO2 but, when sufficient arsenic was added to improve refining, the gas changed during refining from CO2 to 02. This process was aided by the use of nitrate. There appears to be a significant relation between the refining behaviour and the change in composition of the gas in the seed, the best refining being obtained when the oxygen content early in refining was highest.
